What Class should I be in?

I don’t know about you but it has been a long time since I started driving, I’m not even sure I ever knew what some of these things meant. After all I was a 15 year old girl, I didn’t have time to memorize a drivers handbook, I was busy letting the world revolve around me.

Classified Drivers Licenses

Class A

You can drive any vehicle or combination describe under Class B or Class C and a vehicle or combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001lbs or more, provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle towed is in excess of 10,000lbs

A Class A drivers license does not permit a person to drive a motorcycle or moped

Driver must be 18 for a Class A license or have special approval at the age of 17

Class B

Any vehicle included in Class C, a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more and any such vehicle towing either a vehicle with a GVWR that does not exceed 10,000lbs or a farm trailer with a GVWR that does not exceed 20,000lbs; and a bus with a seating capacity of 24 or more including the driver

A Class B driver license does not permit a person to drive a motorcycle or moped

Driver must be 18 for a Class B license or have special approval at the age of 17

Class C

A single vehicle or combination that are not included in Class A or Class B and a single vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001lbs towing a trailer not to exceed 10,000lbs GVWR or a farm trailer with a GVWR that does not exceed 20,000lbs

This still doesn’t permit a person to drive a motorcycle or moped

Driver can be as young as 15 with special approval

Class M

This is the license you will need to drive a motorcycle or moped

Driver may be 15 for a moped and 16 for a motorcycle

Commercial Driver License (CDL)

This is an additional license you will need if you drive a vehicle that requires an endorsement (school bus, hazardous material, ect)

A driver is usually required to be 18 or 21 before obtaining a CDL
